OceanXplorer to Conduct First Major Deep-Sea Research Mission in Timor-Leste

Dili, Timor-Leste — Timor-Leste’s deep ocean will take the global spotlight in November 2025 as the world-class research vessel OceanXplorer arrives for a groundbreaking marine science expedition titled “OceanX Timor-Leste 2025: Exploring the Edge – The Timor Passage.”

The mission will run from 8 to 22 November 2025, exploring the waters north of Dili and around Atauro Island, an area where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet and create one of the richest marine ecosystems in the region.

The expedition is led by OceanX, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, and Forestry of Timor-Leste and several renowned universities including KAUST, University of Florida, University of Western Australia, Macquarie University, Flinders University, and Ocean Alliance.

Mission Objectives

The team of scientists, engineers, and media experts aboard the OceanXplorer will:

  • Document deep-sea and pelagic biodiversity using submersibles, ROVs, and SCUBA surveys
  • Study pygmy blue whale migration, behavior, and health with drones, tagging, and environmental sampling
  • Deploy SeaSwipe AI, a real-time marine species recognition platform
  • Conduct high-resolution seafloor mapping contributing to Seabed 2030 global mapping program

Research depths will reach up to 4,000 meters, revealing species and habitats never previously recorded in Timor-Leste.

Strengthening Marine Science for the Nation

OceanX says this mission will offer the first complete scientific study of the Timor Passage, filling major gaps in knowledge about local ocean ecosystems.

Data collected will:

  • Establish a baseline of marine biodiversity in Timor-Leste
  • Support national marine policy, conservation, and sustainable management
  • Expand international collaboration and scientific capacity in the country

The research allows Timor-Leste to better protect and manage marine resources critical to its economy and food security.

 AI Innovation Underwater

A landmark feature of this mission is the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate discovery. SeaSwipe AI will automatically identify species in imagery recorded underwater — reducing months of manual work into real-time analysis.

This technology will help scientists share findings faster and create digital databases that support global marine research.

A Platform for Exploration and Learning

The OceanXplorer is a floating science and media hub equipped with:

  • Advanced laboratories
  • Deep-sea submersibles
  • High-resolution camera and imaging tools

OceanX will also transform mission discoveries into educational content to inspire youth and build ocean literacy.

“The Timor Passage is one of Earth’s most dynamic underwater highways. This mission will reveal hidden ecosystems and help ensure the ocean remains a source of wellbeing for Timor-Leste’s future,”
— OceanX Chief Scientist, Vincent Pieribone
