The Vice President of Tanzania, Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi has reportedly tendered his resignation.

In his letter dated on Tuesday, the 25th of August 2026, Dr Nchimbi wrote that he has decided to quit from the position

Dr Nchimbi, who was nominated in 2025 to be the presidential running mate in the country’s rather controversial General Elections.

As a running mate Nchimbi automatically became the vice president after the electoral commission announced the results as per the country constitution.

Ambassador Emmanuel Nchimbi took over from Dr Phillip Mpango who became the Vice President, when Samia Suluhu Hassan took over the top seat following the sudden death of the former Tanzanian Head of State, Dr John Magufuli.

Dr Nchimbi at one time served as the Ambassador of Tanzania in Egypt.

Of late a number of social media platforms have been insinuating that the Vice President was being sidelined in a number of state functions.

He is going down on record for being the first ever Vice President to call it quits in his own accord, while still in office.

But in Tanzania, the former Prime Minister, Edward Ngoyai Lowassa resigned in 2008.

Previously, in 1984 the former first Vice President, Aboud Jumbe who was also the President of Zanzibar was forced to resign by Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, following the controversy surrounding the union debates of which he was alleged to engineer.

In 2001, the former Vice President, Dr Omar Ali Juma also had to be replaced but this was after he suddenly died in office during the reign of Benjamin William Mkapa.

His position was filled by Dr Ali Mohammed Shein, who later again became the President of the Isles.

Now this time round, Dr Nchimbi is reported to resign from the position.

It is still early to tell who is going to fill the position.
