U.S President, Donald Trump is now caught in the ‘war’ between Somalia and the seceding Somaliland.
The Federal Republic of Somalia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Mogadishu has released an official statement attacking the American President Donald Trump for endorsing Somaliland.
Mogadishu insisted that Somalia, which is a member of the East African Community (EAC), reaffirms its Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity.
Apparently, President Trump was speaking more directly about Somaliland’s distinct identity. From “We’re looking into that right now” to “Somaliland has nothing to do with Somalia,” his remarks are drawing attention.
Trump was quoted as saying, “I call it Somaliland, not Somalia; actually, it is a different country.”
He added, “Some people like Somaliland, you know that,” and “I think they should change the name immediately.”
Somaliland is an autonomous region in northern Somalia, which broke away and declared independence from Somalia in 1991.
However, following the recent remarks by the U.S. President Donald Trump, the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia expressed its serious concern regarding his statement.
“The remarks reportedly made by President Donald Trump at a rally in Ohio on 12 October, in which Somaliland was characterized as a country separate from Somalia are wrong,” Mogadishu retorted.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia reaffirms that its sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity are fundamental and protected under international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” the statement added.
Somalia then strongly warned against any statements, actions, or policy positions that they claimed could encourage or contribute to the division or fragmentation of Somalia.
From the Ministry’s dispatch, Somalia called upon the United States to respect its sovereignty, unity, and internationally recognized borders and to refrain from any action that could undermine the country’s territorial integrity or interfere in its internal affairs.
“Somalia remains committed to peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement while firmly maintaining that its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity are not subject to compromise.”
“The Government of Somalia values its longstanding partnership with the United States and looks forward to continued cooperation in advancing peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa.”
But on the other hand, Somaliland praised the U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks.
“The Republic of Somaliland remains steadfast in its pursuit of international recognition through principled diplomacy and constructive international engagement,” said a statement from Somaliland.
“Somaliland has governed itself for 35 years and meets the criteria for statehood. It is a very rich country, particularly in natural resources such as minerals.” It added.
President Trump’s statement underscores Somaliland’s distinct identity and its separate political reality
Meanwhile Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, announced that their security forces have dismantled armed groups in the capital, Mogadishu.
“We have removed 260-armed young men from opposition safe houses who sought to undermine the security of Mogadishu. We will be displaying them to the public shortly,” Fiqi stated.
