Egypt has just been hit with a massive earthquake. It raised concern but caused no serious damage.

The tremor which was measuring 5.6 in magnitude struck within 38 kilometers (24 miles) north of the Egyptian city of Suez just after 3:00 AM (0000 GMT) on Monday.

A series of earthquake also hit parts of Mexico, Alaska, China, Philippines, Russia and Fiji Islands around the same time.

According to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Egypt, the earthquake did not result in casualties.

The NRIAG institute said it had received no reports of casualties or damage to property.

On the other hand, the Egyptian Red Crescent said it activated its emergency response plan in the governorates where the quake was felt.

The Red Crescent (known elsewhere as Red Cross) urged residents to avoid buildings showing signs of structural damage and to follow official updates as authorities continue to assess the situation.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the earthquake and reported it to be at magnitude 5.4 and said it struck at a depth of 10 kilometers or 6 miles.

However, other reports said a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the northern parts of Egypt’s Suez, but again no damage was reported by other sources.

Suez, where the earthquake hit, happens to be a seaport city in north-eastern Egypt, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez.

The city sits on the Red Sea area, near the southern terminus of the Suez Canal.

The earthquake that struck the city ​hit the capital and largest city of the Suez Governorate.

Other earthquakes were reported to strike Alaska, Russia, Mexico, Philippines, China and Fiji on the same day.
