Uzbekistan and Japan reach over $12 billion in agreements during President Mirziyoyev’s visit

AKIPRESS.COM – Uzbekistan and Japan have agreed on a package of cooperation projects worth more than $12 billion following President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s official visit to Tokyo, Kun.uz reported.

The agreements span a wide range of sectors, including education, healthcare, environmental protection and water resources, transport and urban development, tourism, agriculture, and disaster risk management.

Presidential press secretary Sherzod Asadov said the visit represented a qualitative shift in Uzbekistan-Japan ties. Meetings with the Emperor of Japan, the Prime Minister, the leadership of both chambers of parliament, senior government officials, and representatives of business and academic circles demonstrated that cooperation between the two countries has moved beyond traditional formats and toward a long-term strategic partnership.

According to Asadov, a defining feature of the visit was its strong focus on adding practical substance to economic cooperation. While bilateral relations had long been centered on humanitarian exchanges and technical assistance, the agenda has now been broadened to cover the full spectrum of trade, economic, and investment cooperation.

“This shift is clearly reflected in the formation of a new portfolio of joint projects exceeding $12 billion,” Asadov said. “Special attention was paid to cooperation in green energy, energy storage systems, and the expansion of industrial partnerships. Proposals were also put forward to establish long-term cooperation programs with leading Japanese corporations.”

Another key milestone of the visit was President Mirziyoyev’s participation in the inaugural summit of the Central Asia + Japan Dialogue. Initiatives discussed at the summit focused on strengthening regional connectivity, advancing the green economy, expanding investment and digital partnerships, and developing human capital. Asadov noted that these priorities underscore Uzbekistan’s ambition to play an active role in shaping a new framework for regional cooperation in Central Asia. The adoption of the Tokyo Declaration at the end of the summit gave this approach a multilateral foundation.

Overall, Asadov said, the outcomes of the Japan visit show that Uzbekistan is steadily moving toward a full-fledged strategic partnership with one of the world’s leading centers of technology and investment. This, he added, aligns with the country’s broader strategy of attracting advanced technologies, implementing major infrastructure and industrial projects, and strengthening its position in regional and global economic processes.

President Mirziyoyev is currently in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he is on a working visit. On December 21–22, he is scheduled to attend the next meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council as an observer and take part in an informal meeting of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
