Tajikistan’s Energy Ministry names country’s biggest electricity debtors

Outstanding electricity bills in Tajikistan, including debts accumulated in previous years, reached 3.835 billion somoni, or more than $410 million, as of June 1, 2026, according to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

Households accounted for nearly 30% of the total debt, owing 1.127 billion somoni for electricity.

Among the largest corporate and institutional debtors was the OJSC Tajik Aluminum Company, or TALCO, which owed 991.4 million somoni to OJSC Electricity Distribution Networks.

Other major debtors included the State Unitary Enterprise (SUE) Obu Korezi Jumhuri (republican waterworks), with arrears of 126.3 million somoni; the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation, which owed 322.4 million somoni; and state-funded institutions, with debts totaling 100.4 million somoni.

Meanwhile, electricity losses in Tajikistan’s power system declined in the first half of 2026.

According to the ministry, losses totaled 1.654 billion kWh, equivalent to 12.9% of electricity supplied. This was 607.9 million kWh less than in the same period last year.
