Tajikistan introduces mandatory 20-minute daily workplace exercise requirement

Tajikistan has introduced a new regulation requiring all employers to organize at least 20 minutes of physical exercise for employees during the working day, as part of efforts to improve public health and prevent non-communicable diseases.

The requirement has been incorporated into amendments to the country’s Health Code. The law was adopted by the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) on June 10 and signed by President Emomali Rahmon on June 17.

According to Minister of Justice Muzaffar Ashouriyon, the initiative is based on a presidential decree issued on February 14, 2026, and is aimed at reducing risks such as obesity and diabetes while promoting a healthier lifestyle among the population.

“The responsibility to conduct regular physical exercises for at least 20 minutes a day is imposed on employers and officials,” Ashuriyon said.

The regulation applies to all organizations in the country, regardless of ownership structure, meaning both public and private sector employers are required to comply.

Broader push for workplace and public exercise

The new rule builds on earlier government efforts to promote physical activity among citizens and public employees. Previously, staff in state institutions and government agencies were instructed to participate in collective morning exercises on Saturdays.

Under that initiative, civil servants were required to take part without exception, according to official instructions. Departments were assigned schedules and designated locations for group exercise sessions, which typically began at 7 a.m. and lasted around 30 minutes.

Authorities say these measures form part of a broader state strategy to improve public health indicators and encourage regular physical activity in daily life.
