A radioecology and environmental monitoring laboratory has begun operating in the city of Buston in Sughd province. It was established at the regional branch of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency (CBRN SSA) under the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.
The opening ceremony was attended by academy president Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, representatives of research institutes and officials from other institutions overseen by the academy.
According to press release issued by CBRN SSA, the new facility will become part of the branch’s scientific and regulatory infrastructure. It will monitor radiation levels, assess environmental risks and support environmental protection efforts in northern Tajikistan.
President Emomali Rahmon instructed the authorities to establish radiation monitoring in Sughd province, particularly at radioactive waste storage facilities, on August 9, 2022, during the opening of the agency’s regional branch building.
Main areas of work
The laboratory is equipped with modern instruments for measuring radiation, analysing radionuclides and conducting scientific research.
Its specialists will examine samples of water, soil, air, food products, construction materials and other substances. They will also assess conditions around facilities containing uranium-related waste, including sites in Istiqlol, Adrasmon and other parts of the province.
The laboratory will measure ionizing radiation dose rates, conduct individual dosimetry and monitor radiation safety in workplaces.
Based on the data collected, specialists plan to prepare radioecology maps to support the protection of local communities and the environment. The laboratory will also contribute to research on the rehabilitation of radioactive waste storage sites and the prevention of radiation-related threats.
The regional branch also operates mobile laboratories mounted on specialized vehicles. They are designed to conduct radiation checks during the transportation of radioactive materials and to help detect their illegal trafficking.
Training and international cooperation
The laboratory’s work will support the implementation of Tajikistan’s national program for the rehabilitation of uranium tailing sites, as well as the state initiative known as the “Twenty Years of the Study and Development of the Natural, Exact and Mathematical Sciences.”
The new facility is also expected to provide a base for training young specialists, organizing scientific and practical seminars, and developing cooperation with international organizations.
Its activities are intended to strengthen Tajikistan’s national system of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear safety, while helping protect public health and the environment.
