President of Tajikistan launches hydro unit No. 7 at Nurek HPP

On Friday April 24, Emomali Rahmon, during a working visit to Khatlon province, launched the 7th hydropower unit of the Nurek hydropower plant (HPP) after repairs, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

It is noted that the repair work began in October 2024, and its refurbishment involved international partners, the company ANDRITZ Hydropower, and TajikSGEM.

The refurbishment utilized modern technologies that meet international standards. Now the hydropower unit is capable of producing up to 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per day.

The repair of the unit was financed with a €34 million loan and 9.5 million somoni from the national budget.

The modernization work on the Nurek HPP began in 2019, and to date, three units have been completely replaced. As a result of their refurbishment, the plant’s capacity increased by 260 MW.

Overall, according to the HPP modernization project, all its units will be refurbished by 2032 at a cost of $750 million.

More than $1 billion is being directed towards the modernization of all operating power plants in Tajikistan, which will extend their service life by another 70-80 years.
