AKIPRESS.COM – Outgoing New York City mayor Eric Adams is visiting Tashkent, where he held talks with the capital’s governor, Shavkat Umurzakov, to discuss urban development, infrastructure modernization, and future cooperation between the two cities. The two sides have agreed to begin preparing a partnership agreement between Tashkent and New York, Kun.uz reported.
According to the press service of the Tashkent city administration, the meeting focused on “current issues in the development of major metropolitan areas, exchanges of experience on modernizing urban infrastructure, and promising areas of cooperation between Tashkent and New York.”
During the talks, Umurzakov briefed the New York delegation on the key pillars of the Tashkent Development Strategy to 2030. Major urban planning and investment projects were presented, including the New Tashkent initiative, the creation of the Yangi Avlod industrial zone, and the development of new public spaces.
The parties also discussed ongoing transformations in the city’s transport system, logistics and utilities. In addition, Tashkent introduced projects implemented jointly with international companies such as Marriott, Wendy’s, Pepsi (United States), DP World (UAE), Veolia (France) and others.
“The mayor of New York highly valued the pace of reforms in Uzbekistan and expressed admiration for the scale of changes carried out under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. He stressed that the capital’s development is moving in the right direction and opening new opportunities for strengthening international ties,” the statement said.
Adams also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation between the two cities and noted that his current visit would allow him to gain a closer understanding of the projects under way in Tashkent, according to the press service.
Both sides agreed to begin preparing an agreement on establishing a partnership between Tashkent and New York. The document is expected to lay the foundation for long-term cooperation in comprehensive urban development, culture, innovation and the economy.
Eric Adams will leave office at the end of this year. The New York mayoral election on 4 November was won by Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani, who will assume office in the new year.
