Meteorologists warn of heavy rainfall and landslide risks over the weekend across Tajikistan

Meteorologists in Tajikistan are warning of heavy precipitation over the weekend, with an increased risk of landslides and rising river levels in several regions of the country.

According to the Agency for Hydrometeorology (Hydromet), landslides are forecast between June 6 and 8 in mountainous areas of the districts directly subordinate to the center (RRPs), as well as in Khatlon and Sughd provinces, and in the western part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

Authorities also caution that water levels may rise in a number of major rivers, including the Isfara, Zarafshon, Obihingob, Vakhsh, Panj, Yakhsou, and Qizilsou rivers, as well as in rivers flowing along the southern slopes of the Hisor Range.

Officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures and remain alert to possible natural hazards.

The warning comes after a series of weather-related incidents in recent weeks. Heavy rainfall and mudflows at the end of May caused damage in Vahdat, Romit, and Panjakent, destroying roads, irrigation canals, and power lines, and prompting large-scale repair and recovery efforts by utility services. Earlier in May, flooding in Kulob affected around 850 families.

Seasonal mudflows are a recurring issue in Tajikistan, particularly during the spring months, often causing significant material damage and, in some cases, loss of life.

According to the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, at least eight people died as a result of natural disasters between January 1 and May 13 this year.

Hydromet has also noted that June is expected to be typically hot across most of the country, with temperatures in lowland areas potentially reaching up to +40°C, while occasional rainfall is still expected in some regions.
