Dushanbe woman faces loss of child custody after video allegedly shows abuse

Authorities in Dushanbe have prepared court materials seeking to remove a one-year-old child from the custody of his mother after a video allegedly showing her mistreating the child circulated on social media.

According to the Dushanbe Police Department, the woman featured in the video has been identified as Mavlouda Burhonova, born in 2004.

“The case materials will be submitted to the court to consider removing the child from the mother’s custody without depriving her of parental rights. This measure is provided for under Article 73 of the Family Code of Tajikistan and is aimed at protecting the child’s rights and legitimate interests,” the police department said in a statement.

Police also reported that Burhonova has previous convictions under Articles 110 and 239 of Tajikistan’s Criminal Code, which relate to intentionally causing serious bodily harm and involving a person in prostitution.

According to law enforcement authorities, issues related to the child’s safety, care, and future upbringing are currently under the supervision of the relevant state agencies.

The Dushanbe Police Department urged parents and guardians to take a responsible approach to the care, upbringing, and protection of children’s rights.

Similar case reported earlier

The police also recalled a previous case in which a minor child was removed from the custody of a Dushanbe resident after authorities found that the boy had effectively been deprived of primary education.

According to police, the child’s mother regularly forced him to engage in begging and sell goods in various locations. As a result, he did not attend school and was unable to receive the education required by law.

In that case, authorities also applied Article 73 of the Family Code, which allows a child to be removed from parental custody without terminating parental rights.

The child was subsequently placed in the Republican Special School.

Law enforcement agencies continue to call on parents and legal guardians to fulfill their responsibilities in ensuring the education, welfare, and proper upbringing of children.
