The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that two people were killed and three others injured in shelling by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) targeting villages in eastern Aleppo countryside.
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Thursday, September 11, citing the ministry’s Media and Communication Department, that the SDF launched shelling from its positions at al-Jarrah military airbase and around the town of Maskanah (eastern Aleppo), striking civilian homes in the villages of al-Kiyariyah, Rasm al-Ahmar, and Habouba Kabir.
According to the ministry, two people were killed and three injured in the attack. Syrian army units deployed in the area responded by targeting the sources of fire.
For its part, the SDF said via its official Facebook page the same day that its forces repelled infiltration attempts and artillery attacks carried out by what it described as “rogue groups” linked to the Damascus government in the Deir Hafer area, “completely thwarting” these attempts. The group warned that responsibility for the escalation lies with “the party that initiated it,” vowing a firm response to any future attack.
Syrian state television “al-Ikhbariyah” had reported on Tuesday evening that the SDF targeted homes in al-Kiyariyah with mortar shells, and struck Rasm al-Ahmar with rocket launchers.
Escalating clashes, infiltration attempts
Exchanges of fire between the SDF and the Syrian army have intensified since early September, with repeated reports of attacks and infiltration attempts on both sides.
On September 3, state-run media said the Syrian army repelled an SDF infiltration attempt across the Euphrates River in al-Mughla (eastern Raqqa countryside), leaving several SDF fighters killed or injured.
One day earlier, Damascus countryside security forces announced they had ambushed a shipment of weapons and ammunition en route to SDF-held areas.
On September 1, the Syrian army reported repelling an infiltration attempt by SDF elements targeting its positions in the village of Tel Maaz (eastern Aleppo countryside). A military source told SANA that SDF units based in the village of Umm Tina and in Deir Hafer targeted Syrian army points in Tel Maaz while trying to retrieve their fighters trapped in the ambush.
The source added that the initial clashes involved light weapons, but as SDF shelling continued, heavy weapons were used and reinforcements were brought in to army positions in Tel Maaz.
At the time, the SDF denied any clashes had taken place with Syrian army forces in Tel Maaz.
