An Israeli media report says anxiety is rising within Israel over efforts by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to rebuild the country’s military.
The newspaper Maariv reported that Syrian authorities are working to rehabilitate the air force and expand heavy-weapons capabilities, including armored units, artillery, and missile systems. According to the report, Israeli officials believe the consolidation of the new Syrian government is progressing faster than previously anticipated.
The newspaper noted that Israeli security circles are particularly uneasy about the support Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are providing to Damascus. Israeli military and defense officials quoted in the report described the emerging Syrian military posture as a potential long-term challenge, arguing that Damascus is strengthening its capabilities with Turkish backing.
One military source told Maariv that Israel does not trust the Syrian leadership and views the situation as highly sensitive. Another said Syria is attempting to rebuild its air-defense network and restore parts of its helicopter fleet.
The report also highlighted Israeli fears of regional spillover, especially in Lebanon, should tensions involving Hezbollah escalate. Israeli military intelligence is said to be closely monitoring developments, while forces along the Syrian frontier have reinforced defensive positions.
