Israel targets sites in Homs and Latakia in Syria

Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on the evening of Monday, September 8, targeting military sites around Homs (central Syria) and Latakia (on the Mediterranean coast).

The Syrian state-run channel al-Ikhbariya reported that the Israeli army struck the vicinity of Homs and Latakia

Local sources from Homs told Enab Baladi that two explosions were heard in the southern countryside of the city, coinciding with Israeli aircraft flying overhead.

One of the strikes hit the air defense battalion of the 19th Brigade in the village of Shinshar, southeast of Homs, while another targeted an arms depot in the village of Maskanah on the Palmyra road, according to local sources.

In Latakia, Israeli warplanes bombed a Syrian army barracks in the town of Saqoubin. Local sources told Enab Baladi that injuries were reported from the strike, along with damage to nearby civilian homes.

Airborne operation in Damascus countryside

The latest strikes came after the Israeli army conducted an airborne operation in late August at a military site in Damascus countryside (southern Syria), without clashes with Syrian army personnel stationed in the area.

On August 28, an Enab Baladi correspondent quoted a Syrian army officer saying that four Israeli helicopters landed southeast of al-Kiswah in Damascus countryside.

A government source told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that Syrian forces had discovered surveillance and monitoring devices near Mount al-Mani on August 26. When attempting to dismantle them, the site was bombed by Israeli aircraft, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and destroyed vehicles.

The source added that Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks prevented access to the area until the evening of August 27. Syrian forces later managed to destroy part of the equipment and retrieve the bodies of the dead.

According to the same source, Israeli warplanes launched multiple raids on the site, followed by an airborne landing, amid heavy surveillance flights.

The bombardment resumed on several military positions near al-Kiswah, with over ten strikes recorded, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.

He reported no new casualties in the latest attacks on Mount al-Mani and the village of Harjallah in Damascus countryside.

On August 26, Israeli airstrikes had already targeted army positions in Mount al-Mani, Harjallah, and Deir Ali, causing deaths and injuries among Syrian troops.

Due to the repeated strikes, the Syrian army was unable to recover the dead and wounded until August 27.
