International silver medal for a Syrian invention treating diabetic foot ulcers

Researcher Ibrahim Mahmoud al-Gharib from the Faculty of Science at Damascus University won the silver medal in the medical sector for his invention, “Nano Dressing for Diabetic Foot and Pressure Ulcers,” during his participation in the 16th International Invention Fair in the Middle East.

The exhibition was held in Kuwait, where the researcher was honored by the League of Arab States, represented by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.

According to a statement published by the official accounts of Damascus University, the exhibition featured the participation of more than 213 inventors representing 30 Arab and foreign countries, amid broad scientific competition across multiple fields.

What is the International Invention Fair in the Middle East?

The International Invention Fair is considered one of the world’s leading specialized events, bringing together inventors, researchers, and investors to present and discuss the latest innovations in technology, energy, medicine, agriculture, and water purification. The event aims to support and encourage Arab innovation and enhance the transformation of scientific ideas into practical applications.

According to the university, this recognition reflects “the development of scientific research in Syria and the ability of its academic institutions, foremost among them Damascus University, to provide innovative medical solutions that contribute to improving the quality of healthcare and advancing modern treatment methods to serve patients on a broader scale.”

Damascus University enters Times ranking

On January 25, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 included Damascus University, placing it among the top 1,230 universities worldwide in health-related disciplines.

Damascus University is the only Syrian university included in the ranking, reflecting the progress it has achieved in higher education and scientific research, according to Marwan al-Raeei, director of the Rankings Office at Damascus University, who spoke to Enab Baladi at the time.

According to al-Raeei, Damascus University ranked in the 1001+ category in the Times subject rankings, which were issued in the last third of January, marking the second consecutive year the university has been listed.

Al-Raeei added that this “achievement,” as he described it, came after the university met the ranking’s 18 criteria, which include academic reputation, quality of teaching, level of scientific research, and international collaboration.

These criteria are essential for evaluating university performance, al-Raeei explained, as they are measured through academic surveys, analysis of scientific publication data, research impact, and other factors that reflect the quality of education and research in higher education institutions.

The results achieved by Damascus University in the international ranking for health and medical sciences demonstrate its commitment to providing high-quality education in health, biological, and medical sciences, according to the director of the Rankings Office, noting that part of the points the university obtained was due to teaching these sciences in Arabic.

Al-Raeei added that the university’s academic reputation plays a significant role in its ranking, as academics and experts recognize the quality of its education. He noted that international research collaboration has also strengthened the university’s global standing.
