A Syrian Defense Ministry soldier was killed, and 12 others were injured today, Tuesday, May 19, when a car bomb exploded near the ministry’s Armament Directorate in Damascus.
Following the explosion, neighborhoods around the site witnessed a security alert and the closure of several roads.
According to Enab Baladi’s correspondent, the explosion occurred at the Bab Sharqi tunnel, near the Armament Directorate of the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) and the Syrian al-Ikhbariya channel quoted a military source and the Media and Communications Department at the Ministry of Defense as saying that a Syrian army unit discovered an explosive device prepared for detonation near one of the buildings belonging to the Ministry of Defense in the Bab Sharqi area of Damascus.
The sources added that personnel dealt with the device immediately and tried to dismantle it before a car bomb exploded in the same area, killing one soldier and injuring others with wounds of varying severity.
Najib al-Naasan, director of referral, ambulance, and emergency services in Damascus, told Syrian al-Ikhbariya that the explosion caused the death of one person and injured 12 others.
He added that medical and ambulance teams are continuing to provide the necessary healthcare to the injured, while monitoring their conditions in hospitals.
Activists on social media circulated video clips showing columns of smoke rising from the targeted site.
Previous Explosions
In June 2025, a “suicide” attack targeted St. Elias Church in the Dweilaa area, near Bab Sharqi, killing 13 people and injuring 53 others at the time.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior said at the time that a suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State entered St. Elias Church in the Dweilaa neighborhood, where he opened fire inside the church before detonating himself with an explosive vest.
An explosion also occurred in the city of Aleppo during New Year celebrations on the night of December 31, 2025.
According to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Aleppo, a General Security patrol spotted a suspicious person near Bab al-Qasab in the al-Jdeideh area of Old Aleppo, before pursuing him and trying to stop him.
During the intervention, the person blew himself up while security personnel were attempting to prevent him, killing one General Security member who was participating in foiling the operation and injuring two others, with no civilian injuries recorded.
