July 21, Colombo (LNW): Five people have lost their lives following a devastating fire at a safety helmet manufacturing factory in Homagama, prompting a large-scale emergency response from fire and rescue authorities.

Police confirmed that the victims comprise four men and one woman. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released, pending notification of their families.

The blaze broke out on Tuesday morning at the factory located in the Katuwana area of Homagama. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly after the alarm was raised, with emergency crews working for several hours to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

The Fire Services Department mobilised more than six fire engines from Colombo, Dehiwala, Kotte and Horana to bring the situation under control. Additional emergency personnel also assisted in the operation as thick smoke engulfed the industrial premises.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, while officials are also assessing the extent of the damage to the factory. Further inquiries are expected to examine whether workplace safety regulations were fully complied with at the facility.

Police said more information will be released as investigations progress.
