[Photo by Charles Wote/Eye Radio]JUBA – South Sudan’s National Police Service has intensified its efforts to restore public safety in the capital, arresting 60 suspected gang members in a series of operations targeting criminal gangs, drug trafficking, and youth delinquency, officials announced on Tuesday.
Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin Buolo, spokesperson for the South Sudan National Police Service, confirmed that law enforcement agencies have apprehended 60 suspected gang members in Juba.
“The operation is targeting emerging gang crimes. Police have arrested 60 gang members, 33 boys and 27 girls, during this criminal gang crackdown,” Buolo stated following the arrests.
He added, “These gang members are involved in drug abuse and violent attacks. We urge members of the general public to cooperate with the police to facilitate operations and curb rising gang crimes.”
Buolo revealed that this sweeping law enforcement campaign, involving joint security forces and the police service, aims to curb rampant drug abuse and increasing gang-related offenses.
He specified that operations targeted narcotics hotspots and aimed to intercept illegal prescription drugs and substances, including marijuana and tramadol.
Last week, a criminal gang crackdown, including nighttime operations, led to the arrest of over 30 suspects in Gumbo.
Recently, security agencies in Juba have arrested several young people suspected of involvement in criminal activities across the city.
Buolo also mentioned that the National Police Service, authorities in Central Equatoria State, and the Juba City Council are launching a crackdown on drug abuse, emphasizing the need for guardians to be vigilant.
“We urge parents to remain vigilant and monitor their children. They need to know when their children leave the house and when they return. Security is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
Juba has experienced a rise in crime over recent years, with authorities and community leaders expressing concern over the growing activities of youth gangs and drug trafficking networks.
These groups have been linked to robberies, assaults, theft, and drug abuse, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods.
Law enforcement agencies have identified several hotspots where gang-related violence and drug abuse are more prevalent, including areas with high unemployment and limited recreational opportunities for young people.
Police attributed some criminal groups recruiting unemployed youths to engage in violent crimes and drug distribution.
