The Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority has directed customs officers at the Nimule border point to turn back trucks that evade taxes through false customs declarations.
Commissioner General Moun Deng Ajuet issued the directive on Friday during an inspection visit to the Nimule border.
Ajuet instructed customs officers to reject cargo found to have been deliberately rerouted to reduce customs duties.
“The issue of routing. Please, Assistant Commissioner, if you discover that this track was meant for the Congo and it meant for South Sudan and routing to Congo is going to reduce the invoices, then please leave it and turn back where they come from,” he explained.
“Don’t let it come in to South Sudan. So next time when they come, they have to come straight and give the invoice, the actual invoice. We don’t want to lose money for bad activities,” he said.
He said trucks originally destined for South Sudan but diverted through the Democratic Republic of the Congo to obtain lower invoice values should be turned back and denied entry into the country.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for the Customs Revenue Division, John Mading Bol, warned that importers involved in fraudulent practices risk severe penalties.
He said any operator caught evading taxes through false declarations will have their operating license withdrawn or cancelled.
“The issue of clearing agent or the procedure, some of them we use to give the wrong declaration so that the revenue is not collected. As Commissioner for Customs, I assure you if that mistake happens or if that forgery happens, immediately we will withdraw the license or we cancel the license from clearing agent,” he said.
“Because you know the license for clearing agent for normally particularly, nowadays is very expensive. To get a license for one year for normally, you have to pay 4,000 USD for one year renewable,” he said.
