Police scan busy streets in Juba using CCTV cameras
Police are urging residents of Juba to report criminal incidents after concerns emerged over armed individuals riding motorcycles who allegedly stop motorists and rob civilians in parts of the city.
The concerns follow reports from several residents who said they were followed and confronted by armed men along Airport Road.
One victim, identified as Yitjuok, said he and his colleague were followed from the government ministries complex before being stopped near Airport Road.
He alleged that two armed men riding a motorcycle and dressed in uniforms resembling those of the organized forces questioned them about their work and alleged political affiliations.
Yitjuok said the men accused them of obstructing a presidential convoy and demanded access to their mobile phones, claiming there had been a security breach.
He said the suspects later took his colleague’s phone before fleeing on an unregistered motorcycle. No injuries were reported.
In a separate incident, another resident, Bol Jacob, said he was followed by two armed men on a motorcycle near Yam Hotel along Airport Road. He alleged that the individuals were carrying pistols and communicating over radios before stopping him.
Responding to the reports, National Police Service spokesperson Major General Daniel Justin urged residents to report such incidents directly to the police instead of relying only on social media.
“We usually hear things through social media and the media. The media is there to inform the people, but the actual step is to report the case to the police. When you report to the police, we know what to do, and the information you provide can help us reach these people,” Justin said.
He said information from victims and witnesses is important in helping police identify suspects and investigate reported crimes.
Justin added that security personnel, including night patrol units, are deployed across Juba’s streets to respond to criminal incidents.
“Our forces are on the ground, especially the night patrols all over the town. Even in the streets, they are there to conduct patrols. We advise that you report any case or suspected situation to the nearest police station. The police are there to help us,” he said.
The police spokesperson called on residents to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activities and other security concerns to help prevent crime and improve public safety.
