The Office of the President has issued a statement rejecting what it termed attempts to rewrite South Sudan’s liberation history, affirming that President Salva Kiir was a senior leader of the struggle alongside the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior.

In a statement released on August 23, 2026, the presidency emphasized that the liberation struggle was a collective effort and cautioned against portraying it as the achievement of a select few.

The statement comes amid political debates surrounding South Sudan’s governance and its democratic transition.

Addressing political discourse, the Office of the President stated that while it respects constructive criticism and public debate, political discussions should be grounded in facts and respect the sacrifices made during the liberation era.

The presidency also questioned the motives of political actors who previously criticized delays in political transitions but now express hesitation regarding democratic processes.

It noted that several individuals advocating for change were themselves key beneficiaries of existing political arrangements.

Reaffirming the legacy of the national leadership, the statement noted that President Kiir’s historical role cannot be separated from the country’s journey to independence.

Following the death of Dr. John Garang in 2005, President Kiir assumed leadership of the SPLM and the Government of Southern Sudan, later becoming the nation’s first president upon independence in 2011.

The Office of the President called for greater respect for veterans of the struggle, warning against using their sacrifices as political leverage. It concluded by urging citizens to safeguard national unity, stability, and sovereignty while supporting a peaceful and orderly democratic process.
