The African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5) has condemned the August fatal ambush on a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) patrol in Jonglei State that killed Ethiopian UN peacekeepers.

In its declaration following a virtual summit on 29 September 2026, the C5 “condemn[ed] the fatal ambush” and called on South Sudanese authorities to “immediately investigate the incident” while ensuring the protection of civilians, peacekeepers, humanitarian and medical personnel.

The committee expressed its “deepest condolences” to the families of those killed, as well as to the Government and people of Ethiopia and the United Nations family.

The C5 also called for “the full respect of the Permanent Ceasefire,” stressing the need to protect UN peacekeepers operating in South Sudan.

The ambush occurred on 24 August in Jonglei State as a UNMISS patrol travelled toward Pajut. The United Nations reported that two Ethiopian peacekeepers were killed and seven people injured.

However, the AU C5 declaration records that the attack resulted in “the death of three Ethiopian UN peacekeepers and the injury of seven others.”

The condemnation comes as UN personnel continue to operate in South Sudan in support of peace and civilian protection.

The C5’s call for an immediate investigation places responsibility on the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure accountability for those responsible.
