Former Naver CEO Han Seong-sook’s nomination as South Korea’s next prime minister marks one of the most unconventional personnel choices in recent decades, elevating a technology executive with less than a year of government experience to the country’s second-highest office.

President Lee Jae Myung nominated Han on Sunday to succeed Kim Min-seok, who resigned from his post to pursue the ruling Democratic Party’s leadership ahead of its August convention.

If confirmed by the National Assembly, Han would become South Korea’s 50th prime minister and only the second woman to hold the position, following Han Myeong-sook under former President Roh Moo-hyun
