South Korea’s naval exports face a tougher political test after Canada

South Korea’s recent losses in Canada and Poland show that major naval procurements are placing greater weight on political trust, long-term military cooperation and industrial ties alongside price, delivery and platform performance.

Canada’s selection of Germany’s TKMS as the preferred supplier for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project reinforced that shift. While Hanwha Ocean remains the reserve supplier while Ottawa negotiates with TKMS, the result still marks a setback for South Korea’s effort to expand its naval exports into high-end Western markets.
