South Korea’s military AI ambitions hinge on solving problems software can’t fix

South Korea’s effort to build a military AI platform inspired by Palantir’s Gotham system will depend largely on whether the armed forces can overcome chronic shortages of computing power, fragmented data systems and institutional barriers that have long complicated defense modernization.

The Defense AI Common Foundation (국방 AI 공통기반), currently under review by the defense ministry, is intended to serve as the foundation for future military AI applications, from intelligence analysis to operational decision making.

Seoul hopes the platform will eventually provide capabilities similar to Gotham, which integrates information from multiple sources to support battlefield decisions.
