Summit delivered political reassurance and sectoral MOUs but avoided binding commitments on defense or economic security
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Seoul on Monday for bilateral talks focused on economic cooperation, technology and regional security, as the two leaders sought to reaffirm ties. The meeting was followed by a joint press statement and the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) between the two countries’ government agencies and industry groups.
The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and critical minerals, while reaffirming their shared commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Three MOUs were signed covering civil protection cooperation, cultural heritage and landscape preservation and semiconductor industry collaboration at the association level. The summit did not include a relationship status upgrade, trade agreement or announcements of defense-industrial projects.
