South Korea on Thursday unveiled measures expected to generate more than 230,000 additional homes in the Seoul metropolitan area, while shortening the standard period between announcing a new public housing site and starting construction from 68 to 37 months. The plan includes more than 100,000 homes on new public sites, including 27,000 units unveiled in Seoul’s Gangseo district and Gyeonggi Province’s Namyangju and Gwangju, with sites for another 73,000-plus units due this year.

The government will also accelerate existing public sites and redevelopment projects while using tax relief, cheaper financing and regulatory incentives to revive private and non-apartment construction. Private
