How South Korea’s ruling party wagered parliamentary norms for legislative speed

The ruling Democratic Party’s (DP) unilateral takeover of key National Assembly committees is a political wager that two years of faster lawmaking will outweigh concerns over how that power was acquired before South Koreans return to the polls in 2028.

By securing control of the Assembly’s most influential committees — particularly the Legislation and Judiciary Committee — the Lee Jae Myung administration no longer faces one of the legislature’s most important restraints on majority rule.

The government’s agenda can now move through parliament with fewer procedural obstacles than at any point since the start of the 22nd National Assembly.
