After Kim Byung-kee’s collapse, DP opts for procedural control and discipline over factionalism ahead of June election

Han Byung-do was elected floor leader of South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party (DP) at a moment when the office itself had become a liability. His elevation followed the abrupt collapse of his predecessor, Kim Byung-kee, whose ethics expulsion and ongoing police investigations exposed the party to sustained political damage just months before June’s local elections.
The choice of Han reflected a deliberate strategy to shift the party away from factional aggression toward procedural control, internal containment and message discipline.
