Court ruling leaves Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon’s political future in doubt

The Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday fined Mayor Oh Se-hoon about $6,800 (10 million won) for violating the Political Funds Act, a sentence that would remove him from office if upheld on appeal. The court also ordered Oh to forfeit about $14,000 (21 million won) after finding that he benefited from privately funded opinion polling ahead of the 2021 Seoul mayoral by-election.

Prosecutors accused Oh of receiving polling services arranged by political broker Myung Tae-kyunand paid for by a longtime supporter. Oh denied requesting the surveys or knowing how they were financed and said he would appeal
