Who fired and who flopped

Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup journey came to an end after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday evening.

A dramatic 91st-minute goal from Stephen Eustáquio handed the co-hosts victory after a tightly contested encounter in Los Angeles.

Both teams approached the match cautiously, but Canada created the better opportunities throughout.

After an impressive display against South Korea, Hugo Broos’ men found it difficult to break down the disciplined Canadian defence and relied heavily on attacks down the flanks, with little success.

Bafana’s Top Performers against Canada

Mbekezeli Mbokazi – 8/10

The young defender was Bafana’s standout performer. Mbokazi was composed in possession, strong in the tackle and read the game brilliantly. He made several crucial interventions to keep Canada at bay for much of the match and was unfortunate to finish on the losing side.

Khuliso Mudau – 7/10

Another dependable performance from the right-back. Mudau handled Canada’s attacks well and coped admirably after Alphonso Davies came off the bench. Although he was caught out of position on a few occasions, he remained one of South Africa’s more consistent performers.

Who Flopped?

Aubrey Modiba – 4/10

Modiba endured another difficult outing. His attacking overlaps offered little threat, while he struggled defensively. Canada’s winning goal came from his side, and he failed to provide enough protection for the defence.

Teboho Mokoena – 3/10

Returning from suspension, Mokoena failed to impose himself on the match. He struggled physically in midfield, was frequently second best in duels and could not dictate play as expected from one of Bafana’s key players.

Oswin Appollis – 4/10

The winger had another frustrating evening. He failed to make the most of the few attacking opportunities Bafana created and lacked composure in front of goal, with several efforts drifting off target.

Bafana Bafana produced one of their least convincing performances of the tournament. Despite defending resolutely for long periods, they offered little attacking threat and were ultimately punished by Canada’s late winner, bringing an end to a historic World Cup campaign.

Bafana fail to convince against Canada and will look to rebuild.
