Karen Carter murder: ‘The Butcher’ extra accused of killing South African expat in France

The France murder of 65-year-old South African expat Karen Carter has sent shockwaves through the idyllic French village of Trémolat, echoing the plot of a cult horror movie filmed on its very streets over 50 years ago.

Marie-Laure Autefort, a 70-year-old former nurse, was formally charged on 2 July 2026 for the frenzied stabbing.

According to UK media, Autefort ironically had a walk-on role as a 12-year-old in the 1970 psychological thriller Le Boucher (The Butcher).

Directed by Claude Chabrol, the critically acclaimed film tells the fictional story of a quiet village terrorised by a serial killer who leaves multiple blade wounds on victims. Carter’s clinical slaying, which left her with eight stab wounds, eerily mimics the cinematic horror.

Karen Carter murder: A fatal love triangle

Investigators believe this was no random attack, but rather a meticulously planned grudge killing fuelled by deep-seated jealousy. Autefort allegedly harboured an obsessive, unrequited infatuation with 74-year-old Jean-François Guerrier, a retired IT executive who was having a clandestine affair with Carter.

Guerrier tragically discovered Carter bleeding to death outside her holiday rental, Les Chouettes, shortly after she attended his wine-tasting event on 29 April 2025.

Autefort’s brother, Philippe Monribot, has defended her innocence, maintaining that her public confessions of love for Guerrier made her an easy scapegoat.

‘A feeling of complete betrayal’

Alan Carter, 66, the victim’s husband based in KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape, was completely unaware of the affair, describing the revelation as “a feeling of complete betrayal”.

Despite their marital strains, he fondly remembered his wife and expressed immense relief following the recent arrest.

While Autefort is currently out on judicial supervision, locals remain perplexed. Many question how, according to reports, a petite pensioner with severe osteoarthritis could execute such a ferocious assault.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of an accomplice.
