Nicolaas Burgert “Calla” Scholtz is facing six counts of alleged contraventions of a domestic violence protection order.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Scholtz’s initial court appearance took place on Tuesday, with the proceedings subsequently adjourned for a formal bail application.
The 66-year-old former fullback, who earned legendary status during Western Province’s dominant 1980s era when they secured five consecutive Currie Cup titles between 1982 and 1986, had been taken into custody by police.
According to the Hermanus Times, Scholtz will appear in court again on Friday, 24 July.
Another brush with the law for Scholtz
Scholtz previously made public headlines in 2016 following an illicit abalone seizure at his Greyton property. However, he was ultimately able to establish that the residence was occupied by a third-party tenant without his knowledge.
The NPA confirmed the current bail matter remains part-heard, with Scholtz now set to hear if the the court decides to grant his release.
Once celebrated rugby player
The 66-year-old was regarded as one of South African rugby’s most accomplished uncapped players after participating in the 1985 Springbok internal tour.
Scholtz was also named SA Rugby’s Men’s Player of the Year in 1988.
