Just when we thought June 2026 SASSA grants would go ahead without incident, a number of challenges have cropped up. The latest of which are fraud allegations surfacing at City of Cape Town clinics. But more about that below …
In the interim, SASSA CEO Themba Matlou claims that June 2026 SASSA grants remain unchanged. Therefore, SASSA Old-Age will go on Tuesday 2 June, SASSA Disability on Wednesday 3 June and Childcare Thursday 4 June. As ever, a fourth payment day will accommodate those under eligibility review.

However, it’s been a time of upheaval for the South African Social Security Agency. The Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe has been fired and replaced with an interim leader. And Postbank has come out and announced changes to its services at SA Post Office branches. Despite this, and Gold to Black card swaps, SASSA and Postbank confirm that grant beneficiaries will not be negatively affected by the shift in working arrangements.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Health Department is investigating serious SASSA fraud allegations, too. Allegedly, staff at some municipal clinics are selling patient folders to individuals seeking to fraudulently qualify for social welfare grants. Town Two Clinic in Khayelitsha is among the facilities named.
INTERNAL INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

As a result, the City has started an internal investigation. To date, no evidence of staff wrongdoing has been found. Patient privacy protections already in place include restricted access to record rooms and a prohibition on clients’ folders. The City also noted that most reported missing folders are typically due to misfiling and recovered within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, Khayelitsha Health Forum chair Mzanywa Ndibongo has called for accountability. “Those found guilty should face dismissal, this is clear corruption. We cannot allow such criminality to happen in our facilities,” he said. In turn, SASSA CEO Matlou reiterated SASSA’s commitment to rooting out fraud. “We urge all beneficiaries with internet access to use SASSA eLife Certification online portal. You can complete grant reviews from home, rather than visiting and queuing at SASSA offices,” he concluded.
