Mogadishu(WDN) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and PM Hamza attended a state dinner in Mogadishu honoring the newly elected Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur.

Addressing the gathering, President Hassan highlighted what he described as important progress in Somalia’s state-building efforts, including the strengthening of government institutions, development of the country’s legal framework, and adoption of laws intended to provide a lasting foundation for governance and the protection of the national interest.

The President praised the leadership and members of the Federal Parliament for fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing that an effective legislature is central to building a state governed by law, accountability and institutional order. Hassan Sheikh also congratulated Speaker Abdulqadir on his election and the confidence placed in him by members of Parliament.

He urged the new Speaker to carry out his constitutional responsibilities with efficiency, integrity and a strong sense of public responsibility, expressing hope that his leadership would contribute to strengthening Somalia’s legislative institutions and broader state-building process.

With Somalia facing deep political instability, the new Speaker has a formidable task ahead. The opposition maintains that both the parliamentary and presidential mandates have expired, placing the Speaker at the center of a growing constitutional and political crisis. His immediate challenge will be to safeguard Parliament’s independence, uphold the Constitution, and help forge a credible political consensus.
