New concrete and steel jetty opens at Gizo Market to boost trade and tourism

New Gizo Market jetty boosts trade, improves safety, and supports tourism growth in Western Province.

A new concrete and steel jetty has officially opened at Gizo Market, providing a critical infrastructure upgrade for the farmers, fishers, and vendors who underpin the economy of Solomon Islands’ Western Province.

The facility, located in Titiana Ward 11, replaces older infrastructure with a more durable, stable platform designed to handle the heavy maritime traffic of the Gizo Kolobangara Constituency. By improving the safety and efficiency of loading and unloading goods, the jetty is expected to significantly reduce damage to fresh produce and streamline daily operations for local traders.

The handover ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation, including the Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, the Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, and the Premier of Western Province, Billy Veo.

Beyond its immediate impact on local commerce, provincial leaders view the jetty as a gateway for the region’s growing tourism sector. Premier Billy Veo noted that the improved maritime access would enhance Gizo’s capacity to welcome cruise ships and international visitors.

“This project will help Gizo welcome more visitors, boosting tourism and creating additional income opportunities for local households and small businesses,” the Premier said.

The completion of the project marks a milestone in provincial efforts to modernise transport links, ensuring that the Western Province remains a central hub for both domestic trade and international tourism.
