During the discussions, the National Security team shared updates on current border security initiatives, including the National Border Coordinating Committee (NBCC) workstreams, early warning and reporting arrangements, and areas requiring improved inter-agency coordination. Stakeholders raised key issues affecting the province, including maritime surveillance challenges, resource constraints, and the need to strengthen communication links between Lata and Honiara. A draft MOU between the National Government, represented by the Ministry of Police, National Security & Correctional Services, and the Temotu Provincial Government was also discussed during the meeting.
The purpose of the MOU is to strengthen the existing cooperative relationship between the MPNSCS and the Temotu Provincial Government in carrying out their respective functions and responsibilities, and to strengthen practical collaboration between the national and provincial governments in advancing national security and border management objectives.
The MPNSCS team also received valuable feedback from provincial authorities, frontline officers, and community representatives on practical improvements to support safer, more secure border communities.
The Premier of Temotu Province also commended the team for their visit and noted that “Temotu Province is looking forward to the support of the National Government for the Eastern Border Development to address border security issues and ensure the security and safety not only of the people of Temotu Province but also of Solomon Islands as a whole.”
The Ministry reiterates its commitment to continue provincial-level engagements as part of its broader national strategy to improve border security and enhance whole-of-government cooperation.
The MPNSCS extends its appreciation to the Temotu Provincial Government for hosting the team and for its continued partnership in maintaining peace, stability, and security along the border.
