Local fish vendors at Taro Market in Choiseul Province are appealing to authorities to provide them with proper space to sell their products.

Many fish vendors in Taro and nearby villages currently sell their catch along the seafront at Taro market, an open area without shelters and proper stalls.

In an interview, a fish vendor, Mr Charles Koleke, said that selling in an open space exposes their fish to the sun, making it difficult to keep the fish clean and fresh.

“We rely on selling fish to support our families, but without proper facilities, it is challenging. Sometimes our fish decompose faster because of the heat,” he said.

 He added that proper market infrastructure would not only benefit vendors but also ensure consumers receive fresh and clean seafood.

Other fish vendors also echoed similar concerns, saying they hope the provincial government will prioritize the construction of a better facility for them.

However, authorities say they are aware of the issue and are working on plans to construct a facilities for fish sellers but no clear timeline has been announced.

For now, the fish sellers continue to operate under the open sun and unpredictable weather conditions, hoping for a proper market space.
