Honiara residents were treated to a colourful cultural showcase over the weekend as the Embassy of Japan and JICA Solomon Islands hosted the first-ever Japan Festival “Matsuri” at the Futsal Court in Chinatown on Saturday, 11 July. The three‑hour event drew an impressive crowd of around 500 visitors, offering a lively and immersive introduction to Japanese traditions, arts, food and community activities.

Ambassador HIGUCHI opened the festival with welcoming remarks before leading the crowd in Radio Taiso, Japan’s well‑known school‑day exercise routine. From there, the venue transformed into a lively cultural village, with families and young people exploring hands‑on booths featuring Yukata dressing, Japanese calligraphy, face painting, traditional toys, and fun chopstick challenge games. Kitano Mendana Hotel added flavour to the day with a selection of Japanese dishes prepared specially for the event.

The stage program kept the energy high with a Karate Federation demonstration, a colourful Yosakoi Soran dance performed by Embassy staff and JICA volunteers, and Japanese songs presented by students from the SINU Japanese Language Class. Visitors also joined interactive Japanese language lessons and a Japan quiz, adding an educational touch to the festivities.

The highlight of the afternoon was the Bon Odori, a traditional festival dance that brought participants together in a joyful circle—symbolising unity, friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and Solomon Islands.

The Embassy of Japan and JICA Solomon Islands expressed heartfelt appreciation to everyone who attended and supported the event. With strong community turnout and enthusiastic participation, organisers confirmed that plans are already underway to host a similar festival next year.
