Building Bridges: Solomon Islands Students Find Support Through China Scholars Association

BY JOY OFASIA

The Solomon Islands China Scholars Alumina Association (SICSAA) is creating new opportunities and support for Solomon Islanders studying in China.

Last week, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Solomon Islands and SICSAA hosted a CSC Scholarship Awareness event at Chung Wah School in Honiara. The event aimed to give aspiring students a clear understanding of the Chinese government scholarship program.

Students, parents, and educators had the chance to learn directly from experts about the application process, eligibility criteria, and the academic and cultural benefits of studying in China under the prestigious scholarship.

The event featured detailed presentations on the CSC Scholarship program, including available fields of study and how to apply online. A panel discussion and testimonials from returned SICSAA alumni highlighted personal experiences, career development, and the value of studying abroad. A dedicated Q&A session allowed prospective applicants to ask questions and get guidance from those who have already walked the path.

For many young Solomon Islanders, SICSAA is more than an association; it is a bridge to opportunities, knowledge, and global connections. With its growing support network, the organization hopes to guide students, reassure families, and contribute to the nation’s future through education.

Scarlett Fai, President of SICSAA, said the idea behind forming the association was simple but powerful: to create a formal bridge, a collective voice, and a support network for students who have studied or are studying in China.

“We recognized the growing number of young Solomon Islanders embarking on this transformative academic journey and saw the need for an organization that could connect them, both while abroad and upon their return,” Fai said.

Fai explained that SICSAA is focused on supporting three main groups.

“First, the students. Whether you are considering studying in China, are currently there, or have returned, SICSAA aims to be your resource for guidance, connection, and shared experience,” he said. “Second, the parents and guardians. We understand that sending a child to study far from home comes with both pride and questions. We hope to be a source of information and reassurance for you. And third, our nation. By helping our scholars succeed and reintegrate, we contribute to the development of the human resources that our Solomon Islands needs. We are at the beginning of an exciting journey.”

He encouraged everyone to join the growing community. “Together, we will build an association that strengthens bonds, fosters understanding, and contributes to the future of our two countries,” Fai said.
