The Lipizzaner is one of the most recognisable symbols of Slovenian heritage, national identity and historical continuity whose significance has transcended national boundaries for centuries. It is one of the rare elements of Slovenia’s cultural and natural heritages that has achieved global recognition and has permanently marked the European and global cultural space. For Slovenians, the Lipizzaner stands as a lasting symbol of pride, connection, and respect for natural and cultural heritage.
On the occasion of this celebration, the Minister Mateja Čalušić highlighted the following: “The proclamation of the Lipizzaner Day marks an important milestone in the effort to systematically protect and promote one of the most recognisable symbols of Slovenia’s cultural heritage. I am proud that this recognition was achieved during the current term of office, which confirms the commitment to preserving the Lipizzaner as a symbol of national identity and its global significance.”
It is for this reason that the Lipizzan International Federation (LIF) was founded in Lipica in 1986. Today, the association continues to connect stud farms, breeding organisations and professional institutions from many and ensures the long-term preservation of the Lipizzaner as one of the oldest horse breeds in the world.
Today, the Lipica Stud Farm is the world’s oldest stud farms, continuously breeding one of the oldest cultural horse breeds. It is exceptional in terms of both its origins and its breed characteristics, which have been carefully shaped and preserved over the centuries.
The international importance of the Lipizzaner is further confirmed by the inscription of the Lipizzaner breeding tradition on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 1 December 2022. This recognition confirms that the Lipizzaner represents an important part of global cultural heritage, while also emphasising the Slovenians’ special responsibility as its guardians and custodians.
Slovenians consider the Lipizzaner to be much more than just a horse breed. They are a symbol of national pride, cultural identity and heritage, deeply rooted in Slovenian historical consciousness and collective memory.
