September is one of the best months to steal away for a holiday, particularly in southern Europe where it’s still very much summer.

Go hiking along Italy’s southern coast, or soak up the sun on a Greek or Spanish island. If you want to go further afield, the delicious flavours of Mauritius are waiting to be tasted.

Closer to home, drive a slow boat through the Cambridgeshire Fens, or explore the peaceful Suffolk countryside.

If you’re in the mood for something special, take over a gorgeous villa in the South of France, or have a romantic honeymoon in Slovenia and Venice.

Greece

Enjoy summery temperatures at the end of September in this delightful two-bedroom villa in Paxos. Cambridgeshire

Enjoy a slower pace of life on a narrowboat holiday through the Cambridgeshire Fens, where life doesn’t go any faster than 3mph. Try this four-night taster that starts in Ely and lets you meander along the Ouse through Wicken Fen towards Cambridge. Mauritius

September is still dry season in Mauritius, with temperatures in the high 20s. Italy

Get to know the beauties of coastal Puglia on this five-day self-guided walk with Ramble Worldwide. You’ll start in Otranto and make your way down to Gagliano del Capo and eventually Lecce, stopping for refreshing swims and wanders round fishing villages while your luggage is being transported for you. Suffolk
