Bratislava responds to public pressure over confusing tram labels

Bratislava’s trams heading to Petržalka will soon display a new destination: instead of “Južné mesto” (South City), the front signs will show “Petržalka”. City authorities confirmed the change after repeated feedback from residents.

The update, announced by local councillor Lenka Milincká and later confirmed by Deputy Mayor Tatiana Kratochvílová, will take effect on 14 December across all trams on route 3, reports TV Markíza.

The original label “Južné mesto” had been used for two reasons, Kratochvílová explained:

  • recent legislation that influenced naming rules, though its interpretation has not been completely clear;

  • long-standing passenger habits, as trams terminated for nearly a decade at Jungmannova and continued further to the area known as Južné mesto.

Despite the upcoming signage change, the final stop of tram 3 will still officially remain “Južné mesto”.

Several stops on the extended Petržalka line are still being finished, including the terminal, where contractors are installing a new shelter. After issues with the previous supplier, the company working on the tram line replaced them, and the city says the remaining structures should be completed before Christmas.

The change aims to make navigation easier — particularly for non-local passengers — by clearly indicating that the tram is travelling to Petržalka, Bratislava’s largest borough.
