A suspect in the mass shooting at Brown University last weekend has been found dead, Providence Police said.
Five days ago, the gunman opened fire in the college’s engineering building in Providence, Rhode Island, an attack that killed two people and injured nine others. He’s been on the loose ever since, prompting a massive, multi-state manhunt.
On Thursday night, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez identified the suspect as Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown student.
According to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, Neves-Valente was found dead with a satchel and two firearms. Evidence in the suspect’s car also matched evidence found at the scene in Providence.
Neves-Valente took his own life on Thursday, Perez said.
In a press conference, authorities said they used video footage and a rental car agreement to identify and track Neves-Valente, who was reportedly found in a storage facility in Salem, N.H.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said the suspect, who was enrolled at the school between 2000 and 2001 and studied for a graduate degree in physics, was not a current student.
The mass shooting happened in a first-floor classroom where students were cramming for an exam. The two people who were killed have been identified as students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
