Campaigns for the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) presidential election intensified as the incumbent President, Mrs. Adama Tuma Gento-Kamara, met with legal practitioners of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) at Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Freetown to canvass support ahead of the polls.
Mrs. Gento-Kamara, who is seeking a second term as SLBA President, was accompanied by members of her campaign team, including the Association’s Public Relations Officer, Alfred Kamanda.
Her engagement with military lawyers comes just days after her challenger, Ms. Martina Baindu Egbenda, the current Administrator and Registrar General, held a similar meeting with the RSLAF legal team on July 22 as part of her own campaign efforts.
The two presidential contenders have been actively engaging key stakeholders within the legal profession as they seek votes ahead of the SLBA elections scheduled for August 1, 2026, in Freetown.
The RSLAF currently has about 40 legal practitioners, including nearly 10 female lawyers, making the military legal corps a notable voting bloc in the upcoming election.
The Armed Forces have also produced several distinguished members of the Bench. Among former RSLAF legal practitioners who later became Benchers are Retired Hon. Justice I.M. Koroma, who retired as a Colonel; Hon. Justice Mark Ngegba, who retired as a Captain; and Principal Magistrate Mustapha Braima-Jah, who retired as a Major.
The August 1 election is expected to determine who will lead the Sierra Leone Bar Association for the next term, with both candidates intensifying their campaigns in the final days before voting.
