The outgoing Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Ambassador Fanday Turay, has praised the institution’s “significant achievements” during Sierra Leone’s two-year stewardship of the university’s Board of Governors.

Speaking at the 35th Meeting of the Board of Governors on Friday, Ambassador Turay said the university experienced “growth in membership, growth in infrastructure, growth in governance, growth in enrolment, growth in finances, growth in international partnerships, and growth in institutional leadership.”

Turay, who is also Sierra Leone’s minister of transport and aviation, noted that Guinea-Bissau officially joined the RMU as the sixth member state, describing the move as “a powerful affirmation that regional cooperation remains the surest path to developing Africa’s maritime sector.”

He also highlighted a more than 30 percent increase in student enrolment this year from last year, saying the growth reflected increasing confidence in the university as “West Africa’s premier maritime institution.”

The outgoing Chancellor further disclosed that Liberia donated a fully furnished 50-bed hostel while Sierra Leone provided a state-of-the-art video conference facility to improve digital learning and international collaboration.

“As I conclude my tenure, I leave with confidence and optimism,” Turay said, adding that the university “is stronger today than it was two years ago.”

Approximately 400 students are expected to graduate during the university’s 20th Congregation ceremony.
