Mr. Fuad Yusuf Bangura, Director of Climate Change at the Office of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF), has commended non-governmental organizations implementing climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives across Sierra Leone. He praised their sustained efforts in protecting the environment and strengthening community livelihoods.
Director Bangura made the remarks while moderating a panel discussion on “Climate Mitigation, Resilience and Adaptation” on behalf of the Chairman of PI-CREF, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, during the ongoing NGO Week organized by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO).
“As we reflect on collaboration and sustainability, we must recognise the development partners supporting the Government in delivering on its commitments,” he stated.
Emphasising the cross-cutting nature of climate change, Director Bangura noted that its impacts are widespread and require coordinated, multi-sectoral responses. “Climate change does not discriminate; it affects all aspects of life. Building resilience and adapting effectively demands collective action across sectors,” he said.
He highlighted Sierra Leone’s continued exposure to climate risks, including flooding, coastal erosion, erratic rainfall patterns, and land degradation, all of which have significant implications for livelihoods and national development. Stressing the need for integrated solutions, he called for strengthened coordination among stakeholders and reduced duplication of efforts.
On behalf of Chairman Yumkella, Director Bangura moderated the two-hour session, facilitating a dynamic exchange among representatives from NGOs and government institutions, including Goal Sierra Leone, Conservation Society of Sierra Leone, Mama-Pikin Foundation, the Ministry of Energy, KADDRO, the Environment Protection Agency, Easy Solar, and Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
Panelists shared practical insights into their ongoing mitigation and adaptation initiatives, outlined future priorities, and reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced collaboration with government and fellow development partners in addressing the climate challenge.
