The proposed new Board Chair of the Legal Aid Board (LAB), Honourable Justice Abdulai M. Bangurah, has been approved by the House of Parliament at Tower Hill in Freetown.
His approval came following his interview on Monday, 27thOctober 2025, by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments and Public Service at Committee Room No. 1, where he was hailed for his good track record.
Speaking during the confirmation, both the chairman of the Committee, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma and members of the opposition in Parliament, including Hon A. A Koroma eulogised Justice Bangurah for his dedicated service to the nation.
The MPs referenced Justice Bangurah’s previous role as chairman of the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) as well as that of his current job as a judge of the superior court of judicature as testament to his remarkable track record. They expressed optimism that he would do his best at the LAB after his approval.
They, however, urged him to use his new role as chair of the Board to ensure that the government empowers the Board torecruit more paralegals, as the current number is far below what is stipulated in the Legal Act of 2012. The MPs added that bearing in mind that the Board is one of the leading performing institutions in the justice sector, it is therefore imperative on the part of the government to fully support its activities, as justice, they averred, is crucial in any healthy democracy.
Justice Bangurah’s appointment and subsequent approval came following the death of Hon Justice Ivan Ansumana Sesay in December 2024, who was the then chairman.
His approval was graced by the Executive Director of the Board, Ms Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles and a cross-section of staff of the Board.
