The Independent Media Commission (IMC), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), with support from BBC Media Action, has successfully facilitated the reconstitution of the governance and management structure of Community Radio Kolenten in Kambia district.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening community broadcasting and promoting accountability, transparency, and professionalism in local media operations. The event, which brought together key district stakeholders, was described as historic, marking the first time community members have been directly involved in the management of the radio station.
In his statement, the Executive Secretary of the IMC, Khalili Kallon, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting community radio stations as essential platforms for grassroots communication and civic participation.
He explained that the reconstitution process aims to align Radio Kolenten’s governance with national media standards while empowering local stakeholders to take ownership of the station’s progress.
He commended the outgoing board for their service and encouraged the incoming board to introduce innovative strategies that will enhance the station’s operations and sustainability.
The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Edward Marah, lauded the IMC for this laudable initiative and highlighted SLAJ’s commitment to promoting ethical journalism, safeguarding press freedom, and ensuring that journalists work in a safe and secure environment free from intimidation or harassment.
He emphasised the vital role community radios play in amplifying rural voices and pledged SLAJ’s continued support in building the capacity of journalists and broadcasters nationwide.
IMC Commissioner, Sao Lamin, reiterated the Commission’s determination to ensure that community radio stations are empowered and operate within the legal framework governing media institutions.
The newly reconstituted governance structure of Radio Kolenten includes a management board responsible for safeguarding editorial independence, ensuring financial accountability, and promoting community participation.
This renewed framework is expected to strengthen the station’s sustainability and credibility, while fostering inclusive dialogue on development issues in Kambia district.
Community leaders, civil society representatives, and media practitioners welcomed the development, describing it as a major step toward strengthening local democracy and ensuring that Radio Kolenten remains a trusted source of information for the people of Kambia.
The Station Manager of Radio Kolenten, Abraham Fofanah Janneh, expressed gratitude to the IMC, SLAJ, and BBC Media Action for their continued support. He reassured the community of the station’s commitment to serving the people of Kambia district with dedication and professionalism.
